Tiffany + Rick / Surprise Birthday Party Turned Surprise Wedding by Jessica Lawson

rickandtiff-351.jpg

Tiffany hit me up back in I think February saying, “I want to do something really special.”
We met, got coffee, and she told me all her dreams of pretending to have a surprise birthday party for her fiance, but actually pull a surprise wedding on their guests.

And I looked at her and said, “a thousand times yes.”
It probably wasn’t that epic. But my heart was jumping up and down.

I LOVE WHEN PEOPLE USE WEDDINGS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES.

So to have a unique wedding is even better. Until Tiffany I had never even heard of a surprise wedding.

But alas, we started planning. And here it is Rick + Tiffany’s big surprise.

One thing I’d like to note in these … the reactions of people were incredible. I love seeing the sisters that got it right away. Then how it took the moms a minute. Incredible. Please enjoy!

NOTE FOR COUPLES:
If you’re interested in pulling off a surprise to this calibre, then keep in mind how your close family + friends are going to react. EVERY TIME Tiffany and I chatted before the big day she made it very clear that she wanted to make sure everyone was happy about it, especially her mom. So by including their kids and parents in the ceremony was really special.

Also, for photographers, make sure you blend in. Never have I ever shot a wedding in shorts, but alas, gotta dress the part ;) Tiffany also told everyone we worked at GoDaddy together in production. I told someone before the big surprise that I was working on a commercial with Miley Cyrus. Hilarious.

Evan + Sam / Lake Havasu High School Sweethearts Wedding by Jessica Lawson

Evan + Sam have been together since before some of you hit puberty. They were high school sweethearts, the best of friends, and they planned one of the most fun and most emotional wedding days ever. These people love their people and their people LOVE them.

Some special things about this day was how Sam incorporated her best fur friend who had passed while they were engaged. She had the sweetest reaction when she saw his charm on her bouquet.

They got married at a golf course in Lake Havasu, Arizona and it was HELLA windy. Like so windy I had to change into my backup dress (leggings included) and have my hair up all day. But you can hardly tell in their ceremony photos.

Evan comes from a big and sweet and ridiculous family, ha maybe they both do. They were a HOOT to photograph, especially during the reception. This is one of the most genuine weddings I've gotten to document. There was a lot of love there. Please enjoy their beautiful day.

TIPS FOR FUTURE COUPLES:
What was really interesting to me was how I didn't meet Sam or Evan until their wedding day. I usually like to meet if not FaceTime before. I've had it pretty made up in my mind that to have this kind of quality of storytelling moments you have to spend quality time with couples before. But that didn't happen here.

Honestly, on my end, I pray and ask God to help me to see people the way He sees them.

But on the couple's end, they have to have to HAVE TO trust me. Sam let me follow her into the bathroom like 4x that day. One of those times was when she was crying about her best dog not being there. I remember changing the plan a couple times that day too, and she totally listened to me. And frankly these wedding photos are bomb.

So if you don't get to meet your photographer before your wedding day, but you know you're going to dig them, trust them. Tell them you trust them. Show it too! Obviously verbalize and communicate what you want, but BE YOURSELF. If you're shy. Be shy. If you're exuberant, do that! Yeah lighting, angles, composition, and moments are a thing. But these photos are dope because of Sam + Evan being themselves. Enjoy your wedding day. Enjoy the heck out of it. And you will have some of the most amazing wedding photos. Show your emotions friends!

Brandon + Rachel / Dreamy South Mountain Farm Wedding by Jessica Lawson

green-300.jpg

There is something so beautiful when a bride and groom are themselves on their wedding day.
Looking through these moments again of this rainy day in Phoenix, Arizona, I am blown away at how much Brandon + Rachel stayed true to themselves. They are sweet, funny, kind, and fun souls. They are the best of friends. And boy howdy, did they have an army supporting and cheering for them.

Brandon + Rachel probably need to host every wedding because they really soared in this role. But partially because they both individually soar in their friendships. I'm really excited to see how they soar in their combined efforts of loving people and living life.

From a more personal and artistic side, this wedding was such a delight to photograph because God set us up with the best lighting scenario. But also because they were comfortable with my husband Cameron and I photographing them we got to make A R T out of their moments. Which is when everybody wins.

TO FUTURE BRIDES:

You have to trust your photographers.
Even if you just mention to me, "I'm getting a little overwhelmed with all the attention." Or even saying, "Can we take a 10 minutes off of photos, BECAUSE I need a moment?" That is so incredibly helpful. When your photographer knows where you are at, they can facilitate how to get the best from you. Sometimes that's taking a break. Sometimes it's pushing through a tight wedding day schedule so we can relax after a family photo marathon. It just depends.
